Also known as Chanakya, Kautilya was the prime minister and the chief advisor of the Mauryan Empire during the rule of Chandragupta Maurya (the founder of the Mauryan Empire). Chanakya is known to be a tactful war strategist, economist, philosopher, and teacher.
He was a Hindu Brahman who studied warfare, ancient medicinal systems, astrology, and spiritual scriptures at Taxila (located in modern-day Pakistan). Because of his wit and knowledge, Chandragupta was able to overthrow the powerful Nanda Dynasty whose center was located in the Magadha region. Chanakya’s best piece of work is the political treatise ‘Arthashastra’ which was followed by Chandragupta to build, expand, and administer his kingdom throughout his reign. Arthashastra was also followed by Chandragupta’s son Bindusara and grandson Ashoka to successfully expand and manage the Mauryan Empire during their reigns as emperors.
